About

We build here — because we live here

NC Builders is a general contractor in Nevada City, California. We’ve worked on homes in this community for thirty years — historic Victorians, mid-century moderns, contemporary homes, and everything in between. We’ve stayed small on purpose.

A local company with deep roots in the trade

Several members of our crew are second and third generation builders — people for whom the work was learned before it was ever chosen as a career. The way you hold a tool, the way you read a plan, the instinct for what’s about to go wrong before it does — that kind of knowledge is handed down, not just taught.

Combined with thirty years of hands-on building in Nevada County, it means we bring something to a project that’s hard to find: craftsmen who grew up in the trade and have spent their working lives refining it.

"The work they did is just perfect. There is not a single thing I look at and wish it had been a little better or neater or straighter. This level of expertise is not the cheapest, but to us, NC Builders is worth every penny."

Why Nevada City

Nevada City is a small town that has stayed itself. The morning light through the maples and madrones, the sound of the creek running through town. Three Forks Bakery on a Sunday morning, if you get there before the almond croissants are gone.

The older homes fit the place — they have proportion and a certain unhurried quality about them. That’s what drew a lot of people here, and it’s what draws us to the work.

We build here because we live here. That’s the whole explanation.

How we work

What to expect

Small company, personal attention

The people who walk your property and understand your vision are the same people who build it. There’s no handoff to a crew you haven’t met.

Clear, honest pricing

Most of our work is priced as a fixed contract — a firm total agreed before we start, payments tied to milestones as the work is completed, and any change in scope handled through a written change order. New construction runs cost-plus, where you see the actual costs as they accrue. Either way, the bid is precise and the price is honest — no padding, no hidden markups.

Clean job sites

We work in people’s homes. Tidy sites, respectful crews, no loud music or foul language. The standard of conduct reflects the care put into the work itself.

Built to perform

Comfort, indoor air quality, and efficiency aren’t extras added at the end. A tighter building envelope, steadier temperatures, lower bills — the high-performance details, whether the house is new or a century old.
